Breast Cancer Awareness Month: know your body, know your benefits

Early detection gives you more options, and your benefits help you take the first step. Here’s when to get screened, what to watch for, and how your plan supports you. Part 1 of a two-part series.

Breast Cancer Awareness Part 1 flyer: Know Your Body
1 in 8U.S. women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime
321,910new invasive cases expected in U.S. women in 2026
>99%5-year relative survival when found before it spreads
1 in 10women diagnosed are younger than age 45

When to get screened

USPSTF: a mammogram every 2 years from age 40 to 74 for women at average risk. Higher risk (family history, a BRCA gene change, or chest radiation before 30)? Ask your doctor about earlier or more frequent screening.

Screening mammograms at $0

Under the ACA, most plans cover screening mammograms every 1–2 years for women 40+ with no copay or coinsurance in-network.

Mental health support

Worried about your risk or a result? Your EAP and behavioral health benefits offer confidential help to talk it through and navigate your care options.

Apex is in your corner

Follow-up imaging may have cost sharing. Unsure what’s covered or got a surprise bill? Your Apex team will help.

Up to $1,400 a year

Wellness money Apex puts behind you

Four separate pots, each with its own rules. They are worth real money and most go partly unclaimed.

$250 Wellness Reimbursement

For holistic physical, mental and financial wellness activities and equipment.

All full-time employees after 90 days of service. Employee only.

Up to $300 from Blue Cross

Two separate reimbursements — up to $150 fitness and up to $150 weight loss — on top of the $250.

Requires active BCBS medical enrollment. Per family per year.

Up to $450 through the Apex Wellness Program

Boost your wellness balance by completing named wellness activities.

Added to your overall wellness balance as you complete activities.

Up to $400 ahealthyme

Points-based rewards through Personify Health for tracking habits and completing challenges.

BCBS subscribers only.

Claim the Blue Cross money first

The wellness policy requires you to submit to Blue Cross first before Apex reimburses from the $250. These pots are sequenced, not freely stackable — claiming in the wrong order can cost you.

Also note the separate Employee Product Benefit: an Apex gift card, reloaded every January, for company products, including gifts for friends and family. It is a gift card rather than wellness reimbursement, so it sits outside the $1,400.

Apex Wellness Program / Vitality Rewards

How to earn the extra $450

Effective January 1, 2025. Complete these activities and the money is added to your overall wellness balance.

Wellness enhancing activities and what each adds to your balance. The full list totals exactly $450.

Notice what this list rewards

Every item is something that either catches a problem early or steers you to lower-cost care — a physical, a dental exam, urgent care instead of the emergency room, mail order instead of retail. The workshops alone are worth $150, the largest single component.

Using the EAP once earns $25. If you have been meaning to try it, that is a reason to.

How to claim

Submitting your wellness expenses

The process

  1. Complete a qualifying activity, or buy an approved wellness item
  2. For Apex Wellness Program activities, send documentation to jeff@apexbenefitsonline.com — the amount is added to your wellness balance
  3. Submit your receipt in Paylocity under wellness code 60025 Wellness Initiatives

Not sure whether something qualifies? Ask jeff@apexbenefitsonline.com before you buy. The test the policy suggests: does this item or service directly assist your personal wellness journey?

HealthJoy — available to everyone

The HealthJoy app and EAP are paid for by Apex and available to every employee, whether or not you are enrolled in any benefit.

If you waived coverage, this still applies to you. It includes short-term counseling, virtual care navigation and help finding providers.

Awaken180 — a weight-management option through Apex

Apex partners with Awaken180° to offer a coached weight-management program. This is not an Apex-funded benefit — it is a discounted program you would pay for yourself, and it is entirely optional.

Weight maintenance + lean, 4 weeks
$1,000
Weight loss + maintenance, 10 weeks
$2,500
Apex member and spouse saving
20% off any duration

Both packages include weekly coaching and education sessions, 80% of daily food at no additional charge, and lifetime maintenance support. Durations can be customized.

If you do use it, the Blue Cross weight-loss reimbursement of up to $150 per policy per year may apply — check before you enroll. See the BCBS reimbursement →  ·  1-844-346-1800

Two BCBS condition programs you may not know about

Hinge Health for chronic back, joint or muscle pain, and Virta for type 2 diabetes — both at no cost, both included with your medical plan.

These require enrollment in an Apex-sponsored BCBS medical plan. See both programs →
